(D)Utilities (2020) presents a collection of everyday objects that investigate the tactile and ornamental potential of 3D-printed surfaces. Emphasizing the layered textures inherent to additive manufacturing, the work highlights the intersection of function, materiality, and sensory engagement.
This project navigates the multifaceted nature of design, with a particular focus on the relationship between humans and physical artifacts. At its core lies an exploration of tactile perception—our innate ability to discern surface, shape, and scale through touch—as a means by which emotional and cognitive connections to objects are formed, challenged, or even rendered absent.
The work poses a subtle yet provocative question: can 3D-printed ceramics offer a multisensory experience that engages both sight and touch with equal integrity? Might an object reveal its identity not only visually, but also through its surface alone—remaining accessible even in the absence of vision?
